Who is Hairy Media?

Started by Jason Manders and Chris Marr, Hairy Media grew out of the Hairy Doughnuts organization. The Hairy Doughnuts formed while Jason and Chris were engineering students at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI. Jason MandersThe first movie created by the Doughnut team documented two years of spring break trips to Utah skiing. A lot was learned during the process and it provided the creative fuel to tackle the next big project that came after college. Motivated by a video contest at a local ski hill, Jason had the idea to make a movie that was about teleskiing that would spoof the Crocodile Hunter. "Pinhead Hunter" was the result and it was the start of a long stint of comedy teleski films by the Doughnuts. Pinhead Hunter won the first film contest, and went on to become one of the most popular movies made by the Doughnuts. Other movies about teleskiing followed including "Free Heal Free Mind," "Next Season," "Pinhead Hunter 2," "TeleCube," and "Greatest Tele Movie Ever." Eventually the Hairy Doughnuts tested their skills at a 48 Hour Film Project were the team had only two days to produce a film about a subject that was not known until right before the competition began. Having drawn "sports" Chris Marr as their topic, the film "The Amazing Healing Power of Beer" was created, a documentary about the yearly mountain bike tour in downtown Milwaukee. The film got a lot of attention and made Jason and Chris realize they could do more then just make tele movies.

As the library of films grew and there became a need to effectively share content with fans the Doughnuts become more involved in web development, specifically the integration of digital video into web content. Various sites were designed and developed under the Hairy Doughnut banner, and soon there was interest from other organizations for help with their sites. Jason and Chris also found themselves wanting to find a way to combined their ever growing set of technical skills with the outdoor activities that they love (like teleskiing and mountain biking) into a viable business. Motivated by and idea to develop an online system to video preview mountain bike trails, Hairy Media was formed. Under the Hairy Media banner Jason and Chris have taken their 13 years of experience and developed a company capable of providing it's clients with full video production along with the services and tools required to share that content on the web.
